February 2024 Classes

Classes will state if they are IN PERSON, VIRTUAL, or HYBRID. Hybrid classes will allow for both in person or remote attendance. You will receive the Zoom link with registration for virtual and hybrid classes.

Please keep vaccinations up-to-date for in-person attendance. At this time, masks are optional inside the classroom; please be mindful of our shared space. Hybrid and virtual classes include a class recording.


Knitting in the Round HYBRID

Saturdays, Feb. 3, 10 + 24 10 am- 12 pm, $90

Wednesdays, Feb. 7, 21 + 28 , 11 am- 1 pm, $90

You know how to knit and purl, so let's move from flat squares to knitting in the round. Knit your first hat and learn skills for all sorts of future projects. We will cover knitting in the round, decreasing, reading charts, and finishing techniques. Students should be able to cast-on, knit, and purl.

Learn to Crochet: Granny Squares! HYBRID

February 3, 1-3 pm, $30

Fun crochet patterns are surging in popularity! Learn how to start a project and form the basic stitches of chain, slip stitch, single, and double crochet. We’ll make a classic Granny Square coaster to give you the skills you need to get started with this quick and engaging craft.

Knit Skills: Brioche Hat HYBRID

February 3 + 17, 3:30-5:30 pm, $60

Brioche knitting creates a squishy, reversible fabric with a distinct pattern - one color dominant on one side the other color dominant on the reverse. In this class we’ll cover the basics of brioche in the round, as well as decreases, using the Harlow Worsted hat pattern by Andrea Mowry. Students should be able to knit, purl, yarn over, and work in the round.

Required Materials:

The pattern for the Harlow Worsted from Andrea Mowry (Print copy or PDF from the designer or Ravelry)

Two skeins of worsted weight yarn, at least 50g each, in contrasting colors. You can use two solids/tonals or one solid/tonal and one speckled/variegated. Two speckled/variegated is not recommended.

US size 5/3.75 mm, 16” circular needle

US size 6/4 mm, 16” circular needle

US size 6/4 mm set of DPNs or a longer circular for magic loop

1 stitch marker and 1 locking stitch marker

Sewing Sessions with Erin IN PERSON

February 4, 12-2 pm. $30

Ready to build your skills, try something new, or get out of the house & chat with other sewing folk? Join instructor Erin West for support & guidance in this 2-hour group sewing workshop. Bring a project, ask questions and brainstorm new ideas. Must be comfortable setting up a machine & working independently. Use of our classroom equipment included (machine, iron, scissors, etc) or BYO favorite tools.

Include your project info so the instructor can prepare to best help you.


Drawing + Painting with Ink: Gothic Romance IN PERSON

February 8, 5-7 pm, $30

Learn to work with the versatile medium of ink! Participants will learn a variety of techniques and fundamentals of ink while experimenting with tone and mark making. From there, everyone will make their own series of ink drawings inspired by Gothic Romance from the Victorian Age. Each participant will leave with 4 finished drawings.

1 bottle of India Ink Black

2 round watercolor brushes sizes 2-8 (like this Watercolor brush set)

Black Micron pens (01 + 05) or any other permanent ink pen such as Sharpie fine line, rollerball, etc...

#2 pencil or similar

Drawing paper (like this pad)

We will have plenty of loaner brushes, rinse cups, and cleanup supplies on hand


Sew Your Own: Underwear with Ann Tilley IN PERSON

February 11, 12-4 pm, $60

Find a perfect mix of creativity and comfort by making your own underwear! Starting with Ann Tilley’s original patterns (hip hugger, bikini, boxer brief), we will learn the basics of cut, construction and finishing. Patterns accommodate hip sizes between 34" - 56" with an opportunity to modify based on individual desires. Class is gender-spectrum-friendly and size inclusive. 

Ann will bring a variety of elastics and trims, as well as a coverstitch machine. You will need a serger or a sewing machine with a zig-zag stitch, stretch needle, and 1/2 yard per pair of undies of 4-way stretch fabric.

Ann will provide fold-over elastic, elastic lace, and band elastic, as finishing options, but students should bring any elastic options they might be interested in using.


Intro to Paper Patterns IN PERSON

February 16, 5-7 pm, $30

Looking to expand your sewing skills, but perplexed by paper patterns? Find your measurements, choose your size and learn what to do when you're between sizes, and decipher all the symbols and markings on your pattern! Bring any pattern you'd like to sew and get started on your next project! This class is perfect preparation for any of our garment sewing classes.

Instructor: Erin West

**We will not be sewing in this class. No machine required.**


Sew Your Own: Free Range Slacks IN PERSON

February 18 + 25, + March 3, 11 am-2 pm $135

These comfortable elastic waist pants are polished enough for the real world! This pattern is a skill-building project for a confident beginner, and will cover pockets, hems, facings, and seams (standard, flat fell, and french!) along with basic fit adjustments. Students should be comfortable setting up their machine and sewing straight lines, and have some experience sewing from a pattern.

For the first class, you’ll need your sewing machine set up, your paper pattern pieces cut out, tape, extra paper, and some scrap fabric for seam practice.

Materials List:

Free Range Slacks pattern by Sew House Seven

Clear tape & extra paper

Paper scissors

Bottom weight fabric in the yardage for your size, not too heavy: Linens, twills, and light to mid-weight denim are good choices

1 1/2” elastic (3/4 - 1 1/4 yards)

Matching thread

A fresh 80/12 or 90/14 machine needle

Erasable fabric marking tool

Bodkin or large safety pin

Basic Sewing Kit: sharp fabric shears, 2 x 18” clear ruler, tape measure, straight pins, seam gauge, seam ripper.

Skills learned: sizing, lengthen/shorten pattern, pinning & cutting, sewing & finishing seams, topstitching, understitching, hems, inserting elastic.


 

Work In Progress Knitting Help IN PERSON

February 2, 9, + 23, 1-3 pm, $30

We've all got a knitting Work In Progress that could use some help! Join an instructor for assistance! Come work on your projects with guidance and support. This is a group class for students who are starting, working on, or need help completing projects. If you have any questions about whether your project is appropriate for this class, please contact the shop with a description.
