January 2024 Classes

Classes will state if they are IN PERSON, VIRTUAL, or HYBRID. Hybrid classes will allow for both in person or remote attendance. You will receive the Zoom link with registration for virtual and hybrid classes.

Please keep vaccinations up-to-date for in-person attendance. At this time, masks are optional inside the classroom; please be mindful of our shared space. Hybrid and virtual classes include a class recording.


Learn to Knit, One Dishcloth at a Time HYBRID

Saturdays, January 6, 13, + 27 10 am- 12 pm, $90

OR

Wednesdays, January 10, 17, + 31, 11 am- 1 pm, $90

If you've never knit before or just need a refresher, this class will teach you all the basics. We'll start off with a simple garter stitch dishcloth, then learn the techniques to add new colors the second week, then add textured stitches in week 3. You'll be ready to knit so many projects after this class!

Instructor: Amie Palmer

Materials:

US sz 7 Needles

3 colors of Worsted Weight cotton yarn like Nifty Cotton (with good contrast, no dark colors)

Tapestry needle

Knit Skills: The Simple Sweater HYBRID

January 6, 13, 27, February 10 + 24, 1-3 pm, $150

Let's knit a sweater! Don't be intimidated; if you can knit and purl in the round, and have experience with increases and decreases, you can make this sweater! With sizes from newborn to 6XL and instructions for most weights of yarn, this project can be as big or small as you like! We will cover choosing a size, finding your gauge, and basic construction techniques for top-down sweaters.

Pattern for the Simple Sweater from Tin Can Knits (Paper or PDF)

Yardage of yarn for the size you are knitting (This pattern can be knit in multiple weights of yarn, but choose DK, Worsted, or Aran if this is your first sweater...)

Recommended needle sizes:

Worsted / aran weight yarn: US #6 / 4mm & US #8 / 5mm
DK weight yarn: US #4 / 3.5mm & US #6 / 4mm
Sock / sport weight yarn: US #2 / 2.75mm & US #4 / 3.5mm
(or as required to meet gauge)

0 to 2 yrs: 16” circular, and DPNs* in each size.
4 to 10 yrs: 16”, 24” circulars, and DPNs* in each size.
XS to XL: 16”, 32” circulars, and DPNs* in each size.
XXL to 6XL: 16”, 32”, 48” circulars, and DPNs* in larger size, 16”, 48” circulars, and DPNs* in smaller size.

* Magic Loop or 12" circulars can be used in place of DPNs for sleeves. Wait to purchase these if you don't know what that means!

Learn to Sew: Tool Roll IN PERSON

January 7, 11-2 pm, $45

In this class, students will learn all the basic steps to sewing by machine, including how to set up the machine, adjust the settings, change a needle, wind a bobbin, and sew straight lines. Students will sew a tool roll that can be customized to hold anything from knitting needles or clay tools to pens and pencils.

Instructor: Erin West

Required Materials:

Your working sewing machine, and any accessories and manual (or rent one of ours)

2 Fat Quarters, or a half yard of quilting cotton (fabric does not need to be prewashed)

A fresh Universal 80/12 machine needle

Intro to Paper Patterns IN PERSON

January 12, 5-7 pm, $30

Looking to expand your sewing skills, but perplexed by paper patterns? Find your measurements, choose your size and learn what to do when you're between sizes, and decipher all the symbols and markings on your pattern! Bring any pattern you'd like to sew and get started on your next project! This class is perfect preparation for any of our garment sewing classes.

**We will not be sewing in this class. No machine required.**


Knit A Colorwork Yoke Sweater HYBRID

January 13, 14, 27, February 10, + March 2. Saturday classes are 3:30-5:30. The Sunday session on 1/14 is 12:30-2:30. $150

THIS CLASS MEETS ON BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY for the first two sessions.

Let's knit a classic colorwork yoke sweater using the Dog Star pattern from Tin Can Knits. We will cover finding your gauge, stranded colorwork, and construction techniques for top-down sweaters. Students should be comfortable knitting and purling in the round, and reading a pattern.

Sew Your Own: Joggers with Ann Tilley IN PERSON

January 20, 11 am-5 pm, $90

Dad and daughter matching joggers…

Sew your own cozy joggers with an original gender-neutral pattern from Ann Tilley! We'll cover basic skills for sewing with knits, inserting an elastic waistband, finishing knits with cuffs and welt pockets, and introduce sewing knits with a serger. Students should have some experience sewing garments from a pattern, but do not need serger experience.

Instructor: Ann Tilley

Materials:

-Pattern is included as an add-on; please pick up and cut your size prior to class. We will let students know as soon as we have the physical patterns for you. This pattern is currently drafted for a hip size of 34-52" and has a roomy fit. Ann will work with students on fit adjustments and expanded sizing.

- 1.5 yards (60"wide) sweatpant fabric or 2.5 yards for narrower fabric. (French terry, fleece, fleeceback jersey, etc)

- thread to match

- 1/2 yard cotton knit fabric for the pocket bags (options will be provided, or bring your own)

- 1/4 yard ribbed knit for the cuffs + pocket welt detail (options will be provided, or bring your own)

- 2" waistband elastic (provided)

-Fresh jersey, stretch, or ballpoint needle

Machines:

-We will be using both a serger and a standard sewing machine for this class. Please bring your standard machine (or rent one of ours) and your serger if you have one. We will have sergers to share for those who don't have one. You do not need previous experience with a serger for this class.


Sew Your Own: Lottie Dress IN PERSON

January 21 + 28, 11 am-2 pm $90

The Lottie Dress is a great wardrobe staple, with a variety of options for sleeves and length, as well as optional pockets. This pattern includes lots of garment sewing techniques, including bust darts, patch pockets, facings and interfacing, understitching, and topstitching. We'll choose our size, cut our fabric, and sew and finish our seams. Students should be comfortable independently setting up and sewing by machine.

Materials:

Pattern- The Lottie Dress from Christine Haynes

Fabric- Prewashed lightweight to midweight woven fabric for your size (2.5-3.5 yds). Pattern suggests fabric with some drape, like woven cottons, linen or rayon if you feel adventurous.

Coordinating thread

Notions- .5 yd of lightweight woven interfacing (like Shapeflex Lightweight)

Fresh machine needle (Universal, 80/12 is a good weight)

We have all basic sewing supplies in the classroom, but you may want to bring your own sewing kit (scissors, pins, seam ripper, marking tools) for convenience.

Bring your own working sewing machine, or rent one of ours.


 

Work In Progress Knitting Help IN PERSON

January 5, 12, + 26, 1-3 pm, $30

We've all got a knitting Work In Progress that could use some help! Join an instructor for assistance! Come work on your projects with guidance and support. This is a group class for students who are starting, working on, or need help completing projects. If you have any questions about whether your project is appropriate for this class, please contact the shop with a description.
