A sock that’s knit like no other!

A sock that’s knit like no other!

Sock Academy: Knit Socks Sideways

Saturdays, July 10, 17, and 24, 10 am-12 pm $90

This is the third class in our Sock Academy with Amie Palmer; we're calling it "With Sprinkles On Top" to follow "Drizzled in Chocolate" and "Not So Vanilla."

I'll bet you've never knit a sock quite like this! The unusual construction highlights self-striping yarns and stretches to fit in all the right places. This class will cover figure-8 cast-on, magic loop, three needle bind off, and picking up stitches. Students should be comfortable knitting and purling in the round, and familiar with basic increases and decreases. This pattern can be knit in a variety of yarn weights with corresponding needles.

Sock Academy is a series of classes covering a variety of sock knitting techniques, but each class can be taken individually depending on your skills and area of interest.

Required Materials:

40" US Size 1 needles (or size corresponding to your weight of yarn)

100g sock weight yarn (the pattern can accommodate a variety of weights; we recommend no heavier than a DK)

Self striping yarns will highlight the unusual construction, but are not required.

Tapestry needle appropriately sized for your yarn

This a free pattern on Ravelry. If you cannot access Ravelry, please contact us for a copy. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hipsulais...

Learn to Sew: Boxy Zipper Pouch

Perfect for travel and organization!

Perfect for travel and organization!

Sundays, July 11 + 18, 1-4 pm $90

Two sizes of box-bottom zip bags will have you sewing zippers and linings like a champ! These handy bags are great for travel or any kind of organization. I use the larger one (10” x 6 3/4” x 3 1/4”) to keep my class sewing tools in, and the smaller size (8” x 4” x 3 1/4”) has been adopted by my child for a mobile craft supply carry-all. Both bags have interfaced fabric on the outside, lighter weight fabric linings, zippers and optional pull tabs.

For the first class, we’ll be cutting out the pattern, cutting out the fabric, learning how to use fusible interfacing and answering machine setup questions. All sewing happens in the second class. This class is perfect for someone who has sewn a project or two and is ready to dive into zippers!

Equipment Needed: sewing machine with straight stitch, zig-zag stitch and a ZIPPER FOOT; iron, ironing board, press cloth. A press cloth protects your iron and board from the interfacing glue - you can purchase one or use a washed piece of woven cotton or muslin around 12” x 18”.

Supply List:

Box Zip Bags paper pattern by Sew L.A.

Paper scissors

Main Fabric* - 44” or 58” wide: 1/2 yard for the larger or smaller bag

Lining Fabric* - 44” or 58” wide: 1/2 yard for the larger or smaller bag

Woven Fusible Interfacing (20 - 22” wide): 3/4 yard for larger bag OR 1/2 yard for smaller bag (try the SF 101)

12” non-separating zipper, nylon or polyester (please no metal zippers)

Optional for pull tabs: 1/4 yard of 1” wide twill tape or ribbon

Thread to match main fabric

Zipper foot for your sewing machine

90/12 sewing machine needles - universals or microtex

Empty bobbin for your machine

Basic Sewing Kit: sharp fabric shears, 2 x 18” clear ruler, tape measure, glass head pins, tailor’s chalk, seam ripper.

*Fabric notes: For the outer fabric, you can pick quilt-weight or a heavier fabric called ‘bottom weight’. Canvas, denim, twill, linen/cotton canvas - all excellent choices for a durable bag. For the lining choose a quilt-weight cotton! All fabric should be woven fabrics. Contact Amelia or myself with any questions. No need to pre-wash fabric, but please do make sure it is not too wrinkly before class begins.

Skills learned: reading pattern envelope, cutting pattern, fabric anatomy and sewing terms, cutting layouts, pinning & cutting fabric, fusing interfacing, seam allowances, sewing & pressing seams, sewing with a zipper foot, edge-stitching.

patternpieces.jpg

Fridays July 16, 23, + 30; 6-9 pm $135

Patterns come in standard sizes, but people are all one-of-a-kind! Fitting skills are just as important as sewing skills for clothes that look & feel great on your own individual body. This class introduces the art of pattern alterations for a personalized fit, and is intended for people who have intermediate sewing skills.

We’ll discuss areas of fit and taking accurate measurements, then delve into commercial patterns and how to interpret their fit. Minor and major adjustments will be demonstrated for common fitting changes in addition to cutting between sizes, including shoulders, bust adjustments, necklines, darts, rise adjustments and fullness adjustments. Specific questions will be covered in the third class, with feedback from the instructor for students who make a test garment for fitting!
