JULY 2022 Classes

Classes will state if they are IN PERSON, VIRTUAL, or HYBRID. Hybrid classes will allow for both in person or remote attendance. You will receive the Zoom link with registration for virtual and hybrid classes.

VACCINATION REQUIRED for in-person attendance. Masks must be worn at all times inside the shop and classroom. Hybrid and virtual classes include a class recording.


Learn to Quilt: The Perfect Picnic Quilt HYBRID

July 10, 17, 24, + 31, 11 am- 2pm $180
Instructor: Sudi-Laura Overstreet

Let's make a quilt! This class will cover sewing a quilt from start to finish using the Perfect Picnic Quilt from Ruby Star Society. We will learn to accurately cut blocks using a rotary cutter, piece with a precise 1/4 seam allowance, and efficiently chain- and web- piece our blocks as well as baste and machine quilt our projects. Students should be comfortable sewing projects by machine (set-up and basic troubleshooting).

Materials:

  • The free Perfect Picnic Quilt pattern

  • For the full-size design (around 68x68"):

    • 1.25 yards of your light color fabric

    • 1.25 yards of your dark color fabric

    • 10 fat quarters of your medium fabrics

    • 4.25 yards of backing fabric (not needed until 2nd session)

    • 0.75 yards of binding fabric (not needed until 2nd session)

    • YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRE-WASH YOUR FABRIC.

  • around 71x71" batting (not needed until 3rd session)

  • Microtex 80/12 machine needles

  • Neutral color thread (cotton or all purpose)

  • Rotary Cutter

  • Cutting mat (around 18x24" is good)

  • Clear ruler (6x24" is a good size)

  • Scissors or thread snips

  • Glass head pins

  • Walking Foot (not needed until 3rd session)

If you would like to make a smaller quilt (around 45x45"):

  • 0.75 yards of your light and dark fabrics

  • 10 fat quarters or quarter yards of your medium fabrics

  • 1.5 yards of your backing fabric

  • 0.5 yards of your binding

  • around 47x47" of batting


Serger Basics: Getting to Know Your Serger IN PERSON

July 16, 1-4 pm $45
Instructor: Amy Edler

Learn how to set up and operate your serger for adding speed and high-end finishing to your sewing projects. Once you get to know your serger, you can finish seams, sew with knits, and reduce bulky hems with confidence!

Materials:

  • Your Serger and Manual (or reserve one of ours)

  • 4 cones of thread

  • 1/2 yard each, knit and woven fabric for sample stitching

We've all got a knitting Work In Progress that could use some help! Join knitting instructor Amie Palmer most Fridays for guidance! If you've taken a class with Amie, or a knitting class at Freeman's Creative, come work on your projects with guidance and support. This is an ongoing series for students who are starting, working on, or need help completing projects. If you have any questions about the class format, or whether your project is appropriate for this class, please contact the shop.


Sweater Skills: Petal Party Crop HYBRID

July 23 + 30, August 6, 13, 20, + 27, 10 - noon $180

This sweet and light knit will liven up your summer layers! This class will cover basic sweater construction, sizing, and fit, lace knitting techniques, German short-rows, and picking up stitches. Students should be comfortable knitting and purling in the round, and following a pattern.

Pattern for the Petal Party Crop (paper copies or digital)

Fingering Weight Yarn for your size (2-3 skeins)

  • Needle A (Sweater Body): One 24” circular needle, US 5 / 3.75 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge

  • Needle B (Sleeve Cuffs): One 40” circular needle for magic loop or DPN’s, US 3 / 3.25 mm

  • Needle C (Neckline): One 16” circular needle, US 3 / 3.25 mm

  • Needle D (Hem): One 24” circular needle, US 3 / 3.25 mm

Knit Socks, Two At A Time and Toe Up! HYBRID

July 23, August 6 + 27, 1-3 pm $90

Learn the technique to knit socks, two at a time and toe up, and you'll never get stuck with a single sock! This class will cover short rows, magic loop, Judy's Magic Cast On, and Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off. Students should have experience knitting socks, or patterns in the round on small needles.

Not So Vanilla sock pattern (included)

400+ yds sock yarn

US 1 circular needles at least 32"

Removable Stitch Markers

The pattern will be emailed to students before the start of class.


Crochet Basics: Little Round Frog HYBRID

July 23, 3:30-6:30 pm $45

Learn a variety of foundational crochet skills while you make this cute little frog! We will cover magic ring, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and chaining. This class is suitable for an adventurous beginner with some previous handcraft experience (returning to crochet, knitting skills, other needlework) as we will be moving quickly through multiple techniques.

Sewing with Knits: Adventure Tank HYBRID

July 30, 1-5 pm $60

Get comfortable sewing with knits on your serger or regular machine! The Adventure Tank is the perfect basic to build your handmade wardrobe and comes in either a racer back or muscle tee style. The Saybrook Tank can be used for larger cup sizes. Students should be comfortable threading and sewing with their machine or serger. Come with your pattern cut; we will cut fabric in class.
