Learn to knit socks from the toe-up, and show off some fun yarn!

Sock Academy: Toe-Up Socks

Saturdays, June 5, 12, and 19 10 am-12 pm $90

Welcome back (or just welcome!) to the Sock Academy! Our next sock is a toe-up ribbed design from Amie P. of Daisy & Clover Designs, starting with Judy Becker’s magic cast-on, a wedge toe, followed by a gusset or Fleegle heel, and finished up with a super stretchy sewn bind-off. Toe-up socks are perfect for using up a special skein, and this design shows off speckle, solid, or tonal yarns. Students should confidently knit and purl on small needles, and have familiarity with different increases and decreases. This class wraps up just in time for Father’s Day (hint, hint)…

Sock Academy is a series of classes covering a variety of sock knitting techniques, but each class can be taken individually depending on your skills and area of interest.

Required Materials:

40" US Size 1 needles (or size needed to get 8 stitches/inch)

100g sock weight yarn

Tapestry needle appropriately sized for sock weight yarn

Pattern will be emailed to registered students and is included in the class

The sleeveless Hinterland Dress in black linen (with added patch pockets)

Fridays, June 11, 18, 25, + July 2, 6-9 PM $180

Instructor: Shaerie Mead

Class Description: The Hinterland Dress offers a timeless, comfortable and elegant silhouette. The fit is loose yet shapely, with bust darts, a gathered skirt with pockets and optional waist ties. In this class, we’ll cover the sleeveless version with a half placket - students can choose any skirt length they prefer. This dress is perfect for an intermediate beginner who has made a garment before - skills taught will include lengthening & shortening, bust adjustments, darts, bias binding, gathering evenly, inseam pockets, buttonholes and buttons.

Fabric can be purchased after the first class, you might need more or less depending on fit adjustments. The first class will cover body measurements and selecting the right size, along with length and bust adjustments needed. Homework will be pinning and cutting your fabric to prepare for sewing in the second class! If you’d like to get fabric beforehand, we recommend choosing a woven fabric with a clear right side (printed side) and wrong side. Alternately, you can choose to make a ‘wearable muslin’ in class - we expect to get close to the ideal fit but the final garment might still need a tweak or two.

For the first class, you’ll need your pattern, paper scissors, clear tape, highlighter, elastic + safety pin, a pencil and extra paper for pattern adjustments. In the second class, we’ll be constructing the bodice, and optional waist ties will be homework. The third class will focus on plackets, buttons and buttonholes. And in the fourth class, we’ll sew pockets and skirts and then sew it all together!

Equipment Needed: sewing machine with straight stitch and zig-zag options, iron, ironing board, press cloth.
