March 2022 Classes

Classes will state if they are IN PERSON, VIRTUAL, or HYBRID. Hybrid classes will allow for both in person or remote attendance. You will receive the Zoom link with registration for virtual and hybrid classes.

VACCINATION REQUIRED for in-person attendance. Masks must be worn at all times inside the shop and classroom. Hybrid and virtual classes include a class recording.


 

Learn to Sew: The Market Bag HYBRID

Sundays, February 27 + March 6, 10-1 PM. $90

Class Description: This Market Bag class is designed for beginners who are learning how to sew. It’s the perfect follow up to our Intro to Machines class! This class assumes you can set up your machine and that you know how to sew a standard straight stitch (which doesn’t have to be super straight). Along the way, you’ll learn the basics of working with a commercial pattern and how to cut fabric accurately. Lots of straight stitch practicing and a few curves later, and you’ll have this roomy market bags for all of your grocery / organizing needs!

In class, we’ll focus on making the bag with the reinforced bottom and strapping handles. For the first class, we’ll be cutting out the pattern, cutting out the fabric, prepping to sew and answering machine setup questions. All sewing happens in the second class.

Equipment Needed: sewing machine with straight stitch and zig-zag options, iron, ironing board.

Basic Sewing Kit: sharp fabric shears, 2 x 18” clear ruler, tape measure, glass head pins, tailor’s chalk, seam ripper.

*Fabric notes: Heavier fabric called ‘bottom weight’ is best for this bag! Canvas, denim, twill, linen/cotton canvas - all excellent choices for a durable bag. No need to pre-wash fabric, but please do make sure it is not too wrinkly before class begins.

Skills learned: reading pattern envelope, cutting pattern, fabric anatomy and sewing terms, cutting layouts, pinning & cutting fabric, seam allowances, sewing & pressing seams, zig-zag stitch, edgestitching.

Join artist Charlie Patricolo to design and craft your own unique cloth doll, with personality and style! We'll start with techniques to create the head, then body, followed by costume. Techniques are a mix of hand and machine sewing. All body supplies are included in the kit; costume fabrics and notions should be brought in for the second weekend. You may choose to work on one doll, or parts of several.


Sew Your Own: Yarrow Wristlet + Pouch HYBRID

March 13, 12-3 pm $45

Keep the essentials organized and close at hand with this cute and practical pouch in two sizes. This compact project packs a lot of technique into a small package, so students should have some experience with zippers or bag construction. We will cover curved and interior pocket zipper application, interfacings, topstitching, and tips and tricks for smoother bag-making and other small, detailed projects.

Knit Skills: Colorwork Hat HYBRID

March 17, 24, + 31, 6-8 pm $90

Learn the basics of colorwork while knitting the ESP hat from the new book Moon + Turtle. We'll learn a tubular version of the Italian cast-on, reading colorwork charts, trapping floats, and centered double decreases (plus pom-pom tips and tricks!) Students should be comfortable knitting and purling in the round. Pattern includes 3 sizes and 3 brim options

Yarn A: approx. 85 (90, 95)m / 90 (100, 105)yds

Gauge: 24 sts & 26 rows = 10cm / 4” over colourwork pattern on 3.75mm needles, after blocking.
27 sts & 34 rows = 10cm / 4” over 1x1 Rib pattern on 3.25mm needles, unstretched after blocking.

Needles: 3.25mm / US 3 straight needles (optional for Tubular Cast-On set up rows), and / or circular needle, 40cm / 16” length
3.75mm / US 5 circular needle, 40cm / 16” length AND needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round
Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Knit Skills: Minimalist Cable Cardigan HYBRID

March 19, 26, April 2, 9, May 7, 14, 21, 10-12 $210

This classic design will fill a gap in your wardrobe, and cover a range of intermediate sweater knitting skills! We'll cover cables, short rows, picking up stitches, and seaming as well as sizing and fit alterations. This sweater is knit in pieces and seamed, and includes two lengths and sleeve variations. Students should be able to confidently knit from a pattern including, knits, purls, increases, and decreases.

Sew Your Own: Heather Blazer HYBRID

March 20, 27, April 3 + 10, 10-1 $180

This relaxed, modern blazer is an excellent introduction to outerwear! Approachable for a confident beginner who has worked with sewing patterns, we will introduce intermediate skills like linings, collars, interfacing and set-in sleeves.

For the first class, we’ll be going over body measurements, sizing, cutting layouts and working with fusible interfacings. Fit adjustments will consist of lengthening/shortening and cutting between sizes. Sewing starts in the second class, and you can wait to get your fabric after our first class if you have any questions.

Equipment Needed: sewing machine with straight stitch and zig-zag options, iron, ironing board, pressing ham, press cloth. For lengthening/shortening pattern: extra paper and clear tape.

Skills learned: sewing patch pockets, collars and undercollars, setting a sleeve, lining a garment, handstitching, buttons and buttonholes.

Knit Skills: Spring Charm Garland HYBRID

March 26, April 2 + 9, 1-3 pm $95

Spring is coming, and what better way to celebrate than a knitted garland of tiny spring charms! This project is a great skill builder for confident beginners, and will cover working with DPNs (Double Point Needles), general toy construction techniques, and knitted i-cord. Students should be comfortable casting on, knitting, and purling, and have some experience working from a pattern.

Sewing Sessions IN PERSON

March 18, 5-7 pm $30

Ready to build your skills, try something new, or get out of the house & chat with other sewing folk? Join instructor Amy Edler for support & guidance in this 2-hour group sewing workshop. Bring a project, ask questions and brainstorm new ideas. Must be comfortable setting up a machine & working independently. Use of our classroom equipment included (machine, iron, scissors, etc) or BYO favorite tools.
In order to ensure that your project is a good fit for this workshop structure, instructor approval is required prior to class. At registration, you will be respond to the following questions:
